67Lose weight while you sleep
Statistics say that 70 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep loss. For adults that’s an average sleeping time of 7 hours a night. New research found that sleep deprivation is the cause to weight gain, even obesity. You can learn how to sleep your way to skinny in just a few simple steps.
Are you sleeping too little and eating too much? Decreased sleep will spike the hormone ghrelin that stimulates your appetite. So you can actually eat up to 300 calories more a day with less sleep. Over time 300 calories will turn into 30 lbs. a year. When people are sleep deprived they’re metabolism slows down and their cortisol raises, this means increased appetite. So what do you end up doing when you get a little hungry? Yes, you start snacking. Also when you’re sleep deprived you don’t get enough REM sleep- deep sleep. This is when you lose the most of your calories. Then there is Hormones which have a dramatic effect on weight gain and loss.

Voted up and useful!
I definitely see a connection with sleep and hunger in my life. I crave all sorts of after dinner snacks when I am tired. This good advice is voted up.
I have been reading and hearing a lot about this lately. Good advice! Turning off the computer a little earlier in the evening would also help. I'm guilty of staying up too late sometimes because of that. Voted up and useful.
Great advice. How I would love to lose weight while I slept. I am a the type of person who wakes up several times a night and can't easily get back to slepp. How wonderful it would be to get a good night's sleep and maybe lose an ounce or two.
Fine article, Up and useful. Add in your own research on melatonin (very helpful for seniors) and not just a key to the REM sleep, but also the body's most effective antioxidant. Use the time-release type so you aren't fully rested at 4 AM! 2.5-5.0 mg is a good choice. I also recommend it, if you are faced with a shortened night's sleep, or jet lag.
Thanks for the tips. This is definitely useful. Voted up and welcome to HubPages.

Goof advice, I had never really considered it, but it makes sense ... not to mention all those extra coffee calories when you are tired!
